Rear Admiral Martin Connell has been appointed the Royal Navy’s new Second Sea Lord, its ultimate ‘people person’.

In its 2022 iteration, the historic position – currently held by Vice Admiral Nick Hine ­– is responsible for all people matters across the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary: recruiting, training, sport, diversity, living/working conditions and welfare, and support for families, plus the Navy’s numerous bases and facilities.
