Celebrating the Month of the Military Child

Each April we celebrate our Military Children and Young People.

Royal Navy Family & People Support (RN FPS) are actively supporting through a range of activities throughout the month with many being around Easter, with Easter Eggs being delivered too, kindly funded by RNRMC. Take a look and see what activities are happening on the RN Forum under ‘Events - Things to Do’ and ‘Local Support’.

It is also a great time to share some of the organisations available to support our Military Children & Young People through their time growing up in a Military Family:

RN FPS not only provide events and activities within Unit areas but take some of these online to ensure they support Children and Young People across the UK and Overseas. This includes the RN Youth Network which we are looking forward to hosting on the RN Forum in the coming weeks.

Through deployment, you can also make use of the Children’s Memory Box Pack to support communication with their Service Person – apply by email [email protected] 

And at times of personal crisis our Specialist Welfare Workers are at hand via the RN FPS Portal: 0800 145 6088.

Defence Children’s Services provides a single focus for all issues related to Service children and young people, providing high-quality education at 22 schools and settings in locations around the world. DCS also directly supports Service families, providing advice on a wide range of educational matters both overseas and in the UK, delivered by specialist education and advisory teams, including the Education Advisory Team (UK) and Oversea’s Education and Supportability Team.

The Service Children’s Progression (SCiP) Alliance is a partnership of organisations focused on improving outcomes for children from Armed Forces families. It is hosted by the University of Winchester and supported by the Ministry of Defence (MoD)

Royal Navy Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) offer a vast range of support to Children & Young People in conjunction with other organisations, including the RN FPS Annual Residential, Easter Eggs and Christmas Presents; Kings Camps, Rookie Academy and The Weekender; Kids; Home Start and Relate. They also have the Neurodiversity Navigator who is there to support you with useful information, signposting and support.

Aggie Weston’s offer a range of services within Unit areas including Pastoral Support and Activities for children. In support of Deployment, Aggie’s deliver Story Books Waves which includes a gift pack and a deployment journal.

Naval Children’s Charity (NCC) aims to provide help and support for children and young people who, through [personal circumstances, are in need, hardship or distress. The also offer a selection of publications, support Neurodiversity and provide sailing experiences throughout the year.

Sailors Children’s Charity offer financial and emotional support to children and families from seafaring backgrounds who are in a time of crisis.

Little Troopers offer support to military children and young people especially at times of deployment, providing activities and publications not only for families but for schools too.

Reading Force use books to bring Forces children and families closer together. Their shared reading initiative encourages families to read, talk, and scrapbook about a book, improving communication and enriching relationships with books and each other – one page at a time.

Never Such Innocence provides tools for children and young people (9-18) to reflect on the realities of war and conflict, nurturing the next generation of thinkers, leaders and peace-builders through the arts; inspiring cultural exchange and dialogue.

Forces Children’s Education website includes clear and accurate information for education professionals and Armed Forces families in Scotland, with information and resources being added regularly.

Supporting Service Children in Education (SSCE)Cymru works with schools, children and young people, local authorities, Welsh Government, education professionals, Armed Forces families and support organisations to gather their views and experiences, building networks across Wales and raising awareness and understanding of the experiences of children of Armed Forces personnel. SSCE Cymru has developed guidance and digital resources for schools and families, hosted conferences and stakeholder days, and commissioned research to better understand the needs of Service children in education.

Scotty’s Little Soldiers is a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved military children & young people who have experienced the death of a parent who served in the British Armed Forces.

The Forces Additional Needs and Disability Forum (FANDF) is a tri-Service group for Serving personnel, reservists and their families who have a child or adult immediate family member with an additional need and/or disability.
